When prescribed with Nexium, you should not take esomeprazole without a doctor's prescription. When prescribed with Nexium, your doctor may recommend taking esomeprazole with a meal or snack to minimize stomach irritation. This drug is effective for treating GERD in as little as 3-6 hours. Nexium can be taken with or without food, but taking it with a meal, especially one containing a high-fat meal, may reduce side effects.
